Le projet original pr\u00e9voyait le d\u00e9veloppement de trois basiliques chr\u00e9tiennes, d\u00e9di\u00e9es \u00e0 <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">San Salvatore<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Santa Maria<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> et <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">San Giovanni Battista<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">En 1490, sur ordre du cardinal <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Domenico Della Rovere<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> des seigneurs de <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vinovo<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, les travaux de d\u00e9molition des trois anciennes basiliques commenc\u00e8rent et la construction d&rsquo;une nouvelle structure fut entreprise selon le plan du sculpteur et architecte <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Amedeo da Settignano<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, qui apporta au Pi\u00e9mont les nouvelles formes de la Renaissance. La premi\u00e8re pierre fut pos\u00e9e en 1491 et la cath\u00e9drale fut consacr\u00e9e le 21 septembre 1505.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Turin, devenue capitale du Duch\u00e9 de Savoie en 1563, a re\u00e7ut le Saint-Suaire en 1578 et, au cours du XVIIe si\u00e8cle, il fut d\u00e9cid\u00e9 d&rsquo;agrandir la cath\u00e9drale afin de cr\u00e9er un environnement digne de l&rsquo;accueillir. En 1667, on fit appel \u00e0 <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Guarino Guarini<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, qui travaillait d\u00e9j\u00e0 dans l&rsquo;\u00e9glise royale de <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">San Lorenzo<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, non loin de la cath\u00e9drale, et qui commen\u00e7a en 1668 la construction de la Chapelle du Saint-Suaire. La coupole, dont les travaux ont dur\u00e9 28 ans, a \u00e9t\u00e9 achev\u00e9e en 1694.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Le clocher, d\u00e9di\u00e9 \u00e0 Saint-Andr\u00e9, fut construit entre 1468 et 1470 \u00e0 la demande de l&rsquo;\u00e9v\u00eaque Jean de Compeys, qui appartenait \u00e0 une prestigieuse famille d&rsquo;origine savoyarde.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">La cath\u00e9drale a \u00e9t\u00e9 gravement endommag\u00e9e par un incendie en avril 1997, d\u00e9truisant une grande partie de l&rsquo;\u0153uvre de <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Guarini<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
